Everything You Need to Know About BBL

The Natural Plastic Surgeon Blog

If it seems like the derrière (and with it, the hourglass silhouette) has suddenly become the IT body part, you’re right. We’ve fully embraced a shaplier body, but to many, these curves don’t come naturally. Fortunately, body contouring treatments like the Brazilian Butt Lift have made achieving the derrière – and therefore the curves – of your dreams possible.

What is a BBL?

The fat transfer to the buttocks, otherwise known as the Brazilian Butt Lift, or BBL, is a two-part body contouring

procedure that includes liposuction and fat transfer to the bum. It defines and repositions the outer thighs and buttocks so they appear more rounded and shapelier. This new, curvier shape is evident within just weeks of the procedure, and when your BBL surgery is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Barrett, the results are quite long-lasting. As with all fat transfers, not all of your transferred fat cells will survive, but the ones that do are permanent. This means that your final results, once your swelling has gone down, are your final results, and with a healthy lifestyle, your BBL after 10 years should be as shapely as ever.

If you have a significant amount of sagging, you’ll likely require surgery to remove loose skin and create a firmer silhouette. Additionally, if you’re looking for a substantial increase in size or results that last longer than a few years, a BBL may just be for you.

If you’ve decided to undergo a Brazilian Butt Lift, have had your surgical consultation and scheduled your surgery, there are a few things you should be doing in the weeks leading up to your surgery. First, and most importantly, it’s very important to be as healthy as you possibly can for at least two weeks prior to your surgery.

This means:

  • No fad diets
  • No excessive exercise
  • No alcohol for at least two weeks pre-surgery
  • No illicit drug use for at least two weeks pre-surgery (if you’re in a legal state, cannabis is ok, so long as it isn’t smoked)
  • No smoking for a least six weeks pre-surgery
  • For women over 50 on hormone replacement therapy, discontinue use two weeks prior to surgery

How Long is a BBL Recovery?

BBL recovery time can vary, but generally, you should plan for at least two weeks of down time and rest, during which it’s important to avoid sitting on your buttocks in order to minimize compression and help your newly transferred fat cells to develop their needed blood supply. Easier said than done—which is why our BBL Pillow transfers the pressure that would normally be on your bum by placing it under your thighs.

Is BBL Recovery Painful?

There can be pain associated with any surgery, so you can expect to be a bit sore for at least the first few days after a BBL. You should also expect some swelling and bruising, which are common side effects when healing after a BBL that may last for up to one month.
