Preventative BOTOX ®
Introduction
Botulinum toxin type A is a biological protein produced by the bacteria that causes food poisoning. Botox — the medicinal brand name for botulinum toxin type A — is a purified low-concentration form of the bacteria toxin. When injected in small doses, Botox can temporarily relax muscles by blocking the chemical signals that cause them to contract. By preventing these muscles from contracting and tightening, the skin appears flatter, smoother, and less wrinkled overall.
Botox injections usually take about fifteen minutes and involve mild discomfort. Fortunately, most patients find the pain tolerable so this procedure does not typically require anesthesia.
To determine how many injections and sessions you will need to achieve optimal results, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Barrett!

Results and Recovery
Botox injections are relatively safe, but side effects and complications can occur. These include: pain and bruising at the injection site, redness, headaches, nausea, flu-like symptoms, and temporary facial weakness (i.e. eye drooping). However, if you are experiencing trouble swallowing, slurred speech, and breathing problems, it is possible that the toxin has spread beyond the treatment area. If this happens, contact your doctor immediately.
Fortunately, Botox injections require no downtime and immediate results, but Dr. Barrett recommends minimal exercise and physical activity for the first few hours post-treatment. The full effect of the injections usually appear after two weeks. Keep in mind that Botox is not a permanent solution, and the muscles will continue normal contracting and tightening after three to six months. To maintain your look, you will need to schedule follow-up injections with Dr. Barrett every few months.
