The goal of cheek augmentation is to rejuvenate the cheek features by adding more definition in areas that have begun showing signs of age. Because some people are bothered by their cheek skin hollowing out and or sagging, they request Dr. Barrett because injectable dermal fillers are one of his most popular options. Using filler injections, such as the calcium hydroxyapatite Radiesse or the hyaluronic acid Juvederm, can soften skin creases, revive shallow contours, and stimulate collagen growth in recessed scars to minimize their appearance.
The most ideal candidates for a cheek augmentation involving dermal fillers are those who suffer from:
- Deep facial lines and wrinkles
- Sunken cheek features
- Acne scars and lesions
- Not allergic to dermal fillers such as Radiesse or Juvederm (Note: you should not use Radiesse if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding or you have a history of severe allergies, particularly to numbing medications like Lidocaine)
Results and Recovery
The procedure can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour. During the procedure, Dr. Barrett will use Radiesse or Juvederm to treat wrinkles and augment the cheek area. The average cheek augmentation patient uses one syringe (1cc), but this can vary depending on the condition of your lips. Many patients will find that this procedure is not nearly as painful as expected. Dr. Barrett takes numerous precautions to make your experience as painless as possible including numbing cream, ice packs, and numbing injection medicine. Most people claim that a shot in the arm hurts worse than chin injections performed by Dr. Barrett.
Post-surgery, the cheek area may become swollen temporarily, sometimes up to one week, with accompanying bruising. Swelling can often be confused for a bad result, so we recommend patients wait a week to let the swelling subside. In cases of excessive swelling, Juvederm can be dissolved within minutes with a dissolving agent.
Within the first few days post-treatment, you will notice your skin and cheek features will even out and become smoother, brighter, and more evenly toned. These improvements will become magnified over the next three to six months as your cheek starts to create new collagen to support the new skin growth.
