A weak or recessed chin can set the entire facial profile out of balance. In some cases, you might not realize it is your chin that’s the problem. Patients often come to Dr. Barrett with concerns that their nose or forehead are more prominent than they would like. Through in-depth consultation, Dr. Barrett can pinpoint the cause of your disproportion and recommend a treatment plan that will have the greatest impact on the face overall. If the chin requires augmentation, this process can often be achieved without incisions, anesthesia or downtime.
What is Nonsurgical Chin Augmentation?
The goal of chin augmentation is to add definition to a lower face that is naturally lacking that desirable contour or has lost fullness as a result of the aging process. While surgical procedures are available to permanently change the lower profile, Dr. Barrett also offers nonsurgical options for patients that want to “try out” a new chin size or don’t want the time or expense involved with surgery. Dr. Barrett uses a variety of dermal fillers for this purpose, which allows him to customize your treatment to your unique concerns, the level of correction you need and the results you hope to achieve.
Is Nonsurgical Chin Augmentation Right for You?
You might be a candidate for nonsurgical chin augmentation if you have one or more of the following concerns:
- A chin that is not proportionate to the rest of your facial features
- An asymmetrical chin that throws the facial contour off balance
- Lack of definition between the jawline and the neckline
- Dissatisfaction with your appearance due to your chin size
- A desire to change the facial contour but not yet ready for surgery
Dermal fillers are appropriate for nearly any patient who is not pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are allergic to lidocaine, let Dr. Barrett know so he can select a lidocaine-free formulation for your treatment. Patients that are considering chin implants may also start with nonsurgical chin augmentation so they have an idea of what a permanent surgical procedure might do for them.
Chin Augmentation Benefits
There are numerous benefits to choosing nonsurgical chin augmentation for your facial contouring:
- Quick procedure with no local or general anesthesia needed
- Return to your regular activities right away or the next day
- Few – if any – side effects after the treatment
- Results are evident soon after the procedure is completed
- New facial contour will last many months, even up to a year in some cases
- Costs less than surgery to achieve your initial results
Since Dr. Barrett performs both surgical and nonsurgical chin augmentation, he will work with you to determine the best option for your needs, goals and budget.
Treatment Overview
Nonsurgical chin augmentation can take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour. Dr. Barrett may use one of two fillers for your treatment:
Juvederm Voluma
Specifically designed to add volume to areas like the midface and jawline, Voluma is an excellent choice for nonsurgical chin augmentation. This hyaluronic acid filler features a thick but smooth consistency that will add the fullness you want without looking unnatural. Results from Voluma usually last about one year.
Radiesse
This filler contains calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres, which offer a dual purpose. The formulation works by adding support to the dermal structure right away, to create visible results quickly. At the same time, the filler stimulates the body to produce more collagen, which extends the results and gives you a natural, beautiful look. Radiesse typically lasts six months to one year.
Dr. Barrett uses techniques to keep you comfortable throughout your procedure as well as achieving an optimal outcome for you. With steps like icing or topical numbing cream, he can eliminate most pain associated with the injections and patients are surprised to find the treatment is much more pleasant than they anticipate.
After Your Nonsurgical Chin Augmentation
After your treatment, your chin may swell temporarily. This side effect is generally mild and will subside within a week. Bruising can also occur but is much rarer and will also dissipate within a week or two. You might notice your skin and chin features will even out in the days following your appointment. Skin tone may become more even while the complexion often looks brighter and smoother. Your full results should be apparent within a week or two and continue to improve in the following weeks as your body begins to produce additional collagen to support the rejuvenation process.
Keep in mind the results of nonsurgical chin augmentation are temporary. In order to maintain your positive results, you will need to keep a regular treatment schedule. Some patients decide to move to surgical skin augmentation if they are happy with their results, to avoid scheduling multiple appointments.
