Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy Bear Implants

Introduction

“Gummy bear” or form stable implants are a popular option for breast surgery patients because they contain a cohesive silicon filling that is thicker and more structured than the traditional silicone gel implants. Because of their stable filling, these implants can retain the coveted “teardrop” shape without much assistance. For a more lifted “push-up bra” appearance, we also offer rounded gummy bear implants. Regardless of shape type, gummy bear implants are a popular option for their durability. Unlike traditional silicone and saline gel implants, gummy bear implants are unlikely to fold or wrinkle and they are not easily distorted by pressure. Furthermore, our patients are always satisfied because they experience minimal sagging and side-to-side movement after surgery.

Candidates

The breast augmentation procedure lasts one to two hours and is typically performed with general anesthesia. Incisions are made in discreet places on the breast to minimize scar visibility. There are a couple different locations that incisions may be placed including:

  • In the armpit (transaxillary)
  • In the crease on the underside of the breast (inframammary)
  • Around the areola, the dark skin around the nipple (periareolar)

The breast is then lifted, creating a pocket into which the implant is inserted.

Placement Options

Implants may be placed either beneath the muscle of the chest (pectoralis) or beneath the breast tissue. Placement beneath the muscle of the chest provides a few advantages over placement beneath the breast tissue only. These include reduced risk of capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant) and less interference with mammogram examinations. Possible disadvantages include increased pain in the first few days following surgery and the possible need for drainage tubes. Dr. Barrett will discuss both options and help you decide which would be best for you.

Results and Recovery

Recovery time after breast augmentation surgery is usually a few days and many patients return to work within the week. Any post-operative pain, swelling and sensitivity will generally reside over the first few weeks.

Scars from incisions will begin to fade after a couple months. Regular monitoring of breast implants after breast augmentation is recommended to ensure continuing breast and implant health.
