Gummy Bear Implants

Women who decide to enhance the size, shape or position of their breasts have an extensive range of options today. One of the most recent introductions to the breast augmentation process has been form-stable breast implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants. Dr. Daniel Barrett offers gummy bear implants to his patients as one option in breast augmentation surgery. With different implant types, placements and techniques available, Dr. Barrett will provide you with enough time and attention to ensure the treatment plan you choose fits your body and your aesthetic goals beautifully.

What are Gummy Bear Implants?

Gummy bear implants are popular options for breast surgery patients because they contain a cohesive silicone filling that is thicker and more structured than the traditional silicone gel implants. Because of the more stable composite, these implants can retain the coveted teardrop shape without much assistance or support. For a more lifted, push-up bra look, we also offer round gummy bear implants that increase upper pole fullness in the breasts.

Regardless of the shape, gummy bear implants are also a popular option due to their durability. Unlike traditional silicone and saline gel implants, gummy bear implants are unlikely to fold or wrinkle, and they are not easily distorted by pressure. Another reason for their high patient satisfaction rate is that patients typically experience minimal sagging and side-to-side movement after surgery.

Are Gummy Bear Implants Right for You?

While gummy bear implants offer numerous benefits to the right patient, they are not the best choice for every breast augmentation patient. Dr. Barrett may recommend breast augmentation if you are:

  • In good general health with no severe underlying medical conditions
  • A non-smoker (smokers will be advised to quit for six weeks or more before and after surgery)
  • Prepared to take enough time off work and activities to recover from your procedure
  • Healthy self-image and positive reasons for wanting breast augmentation
  • Realistic expectations about what gummy bear implants can (and can’t) do for you

While Dr. Barrett is committed to helping you achieve your aesthetic goals, your safety is his number one priority. He will meticulously review your medical history and assess your current health to determine whether breast augmentation using gummy bear implants will be both safe and successful for you.

Selecting Your Plastic Surgeon

Whether you move forward with gummy bear implants or another surgical plan for your breast augmentation, your selection of a plastic surgeon will be paramount to the success of your procedure. It is critical to select a surgeon that not only has the experience and expertise to produce optimal results but one that will take ample time to listen to your concerns and goals, so your procedure is tailored to your specifications. Dr. Barrett performs fewer surgeries each week, so he can provide all of his patients the time and attention they deserve as they embark on their plastic surgery journey.

Benefits of Gummy Bear Implants

You may have a variety of reasons for choosing gummy bear implants over other breast augmentation options:

  • Less risk of folding and rippling, which makes them a preferred choice for patients with less breast tissue
  • Possible lower risk of capsular contracture, a painful complication that can occur with implant
  • If the implant tears or ruptures, it will continue to hold its original shape and size
  • Less likely to change shape or position in the breast over time
  • Come in both round and teardrop shape as well as a range of sizes for full customization

While there are many good reasons to consider gummy bear implants, this is not the right choice for every patient. Dr. Barrett will evaluate your situation and your aesthetic goals to help you decide if this approach is the best one for you.

Options for Your Gummy Bear Implants

In addition to choosing the size and shape of implants that fit your body proportions best, there are other choices you will need to make as you prepare for your implant procedure:

Incision Placement

Dr. Barrett may use different locations for your incisions:

  • Under the arm inside the armpit (transaxillary)
  • Underneath the breast, inside the crease (inframammary)
  • Encircling the areola (periareolar)

No matter where your incisions are placed, Dr. Barrett will take great care to ensure the post-operative scars will be as invisible as possible.

Implant Placement

Dr. Barrett may place your implants beneath the muscle of the chest (pectoralis) or the breast tissue. Placement beneath the muscle of the chest provides some benefits over placement over the muscle and under the breast tissue. These include less interference during mammogram assessments and a possible reduction in the risk of capsular contracture (post-operative tightening around the implant). Possible drawbacks include increased pain in the first few days following surgery and the possible need for drainage tubes. For women with minimal breast tissue, placement under the chest muscle may be the only viable choice, since placement on top of the muscle could reveal the edges of the implant on the outside of the breast. Dr. Barrett will discuss both options and help you determine which one will work best for you.

Procedure Overview

Dr. Barrett will perform your breast augmentation under general anesthesia in most cases. He will create incisions in discrete areas on the breast to minimize scar visibility. Through the incisions, he will lift the breast to form a pocket where he will insert the implant. Incisions are closed using a layered approach that minimizes tension during the healing process and creates a better aesthetic result. The entire procedure should last about two hours, and you will be able to go home within a few hours after your surgery to recover in the comfort of your own home.

After Your Gummy Bear Implants

Recovery time after breast augmentation surgery is usually a few days, and many patients return to work within the week. Any post-operative pain, swelling and sensitivity will subside over the first few weeks. Scars from incisions will begin to fade after a couple of months. Regular monitoring of breast implants is recommended to ensure continuing breast and implant health.

Durable, Natural, Beautiful

Gummy bear implants are a favorite way to enhance the natural beauty of your breasts, with durability that will ensure you can enjoy your new appearance for many years.
