What is Microneedling with PRP?

The Natural Plastic Surgeon Blog

Let’s be honest, we all want clear skin that looks like it’s filtered in real life. But what are we willing to do to get it? If you follow beauty trends closely, you may remember seeing a photo Kim Kardashian covered in blood, posting about her “vampire facial”. This facial she received is actually called Microneedling with Platelet-Rich Plasma. Microneedling is a decades old procedure that just recently started blooming in the beauty and skincare industry.

This procedure on its own is great, but it’s the combination of Microneedling and PRP that is so effective. Clients rely on tiny needles poking the top of their skin to get gorgeous, poreless results. The treatment maximizes skin quality in which your own plasma (PRP)  is applied onto your face after Microneedling. Microneedling as a procedure on its own is an effective way to improve the overall appearance of skin, however it is the properties in the PRP, which stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, that really helps supercharge the treatment.

PRP applied directly into open pores allows for 300-700% skin enrichment. Because the healing plasma comes from the patient’s own skin, rapid cell turnover and skin regeneration is the end result. Platelet-Rich Plasma is not only used for treating skin, it also serves many other medical purposes. It is becoming a valuable treatment to promote healing in many different procedures, such as dental and oral surgery, arthritic knee treatment, and treatment of chronic tendon injuries. Using the natural plasma from the patient’s own body allows for minimal to no negative bodily reactions. PRP is a natural healer, and when used in combination with Microneedling, produces absolutely beautiful results.

Am I a candidate?

Everyone is a candidate for Microneedling. It’s safe, and works on all skin types. It’s the perfect treatment for anyone who wants to diminish scars, reduce pore size, and improve overall skin quality and health. Microneedling is also a very effective treatment for fading stretch marks, and can be performed on any part of the body.

What are the needles like?

There are a variety of different options when it comes to needle sizes and what they can do. The shorter needle penetration aids to enhance product penetration and smooth the skin, while longer needle penetration helps to create a deeper collagen response and treat acne scars, wrinkles, and, texture. In addition to different sizes, there are also different approaches with pressure. Lighter treatments leave the skin sensitive and red or a day or so, while harder pressure and more aggressive needling can cause bleeding, swelling, and longer downtime. Each doctor has their own way of Microneedling, and choosing a needle size depends on each individual’s goal.

Does it hurt?

When basing a procedure around small needles being directed into the face, you would expect there to be quite a bit of pain. Fortunately, topical numbing gel is applied to the face prior to the procedure which allows for minimal pain. Some clients even fall asleep during their treatment!

Why is my blood drawn first and what is PRP?

The person doing your treatment will let you know what drawing your blood is a step in the procedure. The esthetician or surgeon performing this procedure is drawing your blood in order to get your PRP, which stands for platelet rich plasma. These platelets are separated from your blood because they are high in growth hormone. After the Microneedling has begun, the doctor will squirt doses of your own PRP over your face to aid in cell turnover, and optimal skin regeneration.

How much does it cost?

A Microneedling treatment with PRP costs $799 and you can add in Microneedling of the neck for an additional fee. There are package deals available for clients who are looking to book multiple sessions at one time.

Is there downtime?

The downtime is minimal, however will likely experience redness for 48-72 hours after the procedure that resembles a sunburn. Patients are restricted from working out for 48 hours and sun exposure for 72 hours.

How soon can you see results?

You will see the best results a month or so after the initial procedure, but similar to other facials or microdermabrasion, commit to more than one session to see the best results. We recommend a minimum of 3 treatments spaced out a month apart.
