Understanding Mommy Makeovers | Barrett Plastic Surgery
The Natural Plastic Surgeon Blog
Mommy makeovers have become increasingly popular as plastic surgery becomes more accessible to people from all walks of life. Mommy makeovers in Beverly Hills are particularly popular, ensuring that moms are able to snap back as fast as possible. Real Housewives swear by the surgery with many cast members across the franchise speaking out about getting it.
Whitney Rose from Salt Lake City recalls not being able to restore her stomach back to her pre-baby figure with exercise and diet alone, especially after experiencing separation of her abdominal muscles during pregnancy. She decided to get a mommy makeover and she couldn’t be happier with her results.
Considering that childbirth is one of the great equalizers of women, it makes sense that plastic surgery after the body transforms from pregnancy is one of the most popular procedures. Though usually referred to under the umbrella term “mommy makeover,” there’s no one size fits all for the surgery. It’s a customized procedure, usually focusing on the breasts and abdomen, that is performed during one surgery and restores the body after having a child. Mommy makeover options include breast augmentation, lifts, or reductions, tummy tucks and liposuction.
Everyone experiences pregnancy differently, so every mommy makeover will be different. After pregnancy, many women notice changes in the volume or placement of their breasts, a loss of shape in the buttocks, weight gain, skin sagging, permanent bulging in the abdomen, and abdominal muscle separation. The mommy makeover is specifically tailored to the patients’ needs based on how their body uniquely changed during pregnancy. Patients work closely with their surgeon to decide the best approach for desired results. It’s usually performed in a single procedure for minimal time under anesthesia and a smooth linear healing process.
Factors that determine if someone is a good candidate for the mommy makeover include good general health without underlying medical conditions that could complicate the procedure, healthy reasons for wanting the operation with realistic expectations of the outcome, and openness to discussing post-pregnancy concerns. These precautions ensure that the mommy makeover will be safe and successful. Possible risks of the surgery include, but are not limited to, bleeding, infection, hematoma, inability to breastfeed, seroma, loss of nipple sensation, capsular contracture, and fat necrosis.
Mommy makeover surgery recovery can be intense because it’s an extensive procedure involving multiple incisions, so some patients are required to stay in an aftercare facility.
However, most patients are able to return to the majority of their activities within two weeks with restrictions on strenuous exercise for four to six weeks’ post-surgery. Preparing for the procedure is just as important as the aftercare — presurgery plans can drastically improve the recovery process. This includes taking time off from work, preparing meals and making accommodations while mobility is restricted, filling prescriptions, and making a plan with your doctor before the surgery. Pre-op instructions from your doctor may include quitting smoking at least six weeks before and after the procedure and refraining from taking any medications that could increase the risk of bleeding.
But, since the procedure is so extensive, it also yields some of the most dramatic and enduring results in plastic surgery. Patients see full-body improvement that lasts for many years. The mommy makeover increases confidence and body-image, reversing the toll childbirth has on the body. Mommy makeovers are one of the most popular procedures at Dr. Barrett’s Los Angeles practice. As he puts it, “We all make sacrifices for our children and they are precious, but we also want to feel good about our bodies. Nothing in plastic surgery looks better than a mother getting her body back.”
